About Meeting of Styles

Meeting of Styles is an international mural festival that transforms our neighborhood into a walkable museum. Artists from around the world donate their time and talent, turning our streets into a canvas of creativity. This event is crucial for our Southeast Side, fostering community engagement, urban revitalization, and cultural preservation.

The Youth Photography Challenge

This challenge isn't just about taking photos – it's about nurturing creativity, building confidence, and providing a platform for young voices to be heard. With disposable cameras in hand, these budding photographers will document the raw energy and artistry of Meeting of Styles, culminating in a gallery exhibition of their work.

We're inviting 4-6 youth photographers, aged 18-24, to capture the essence of Meeting of Styles through their lenses. Here's what makes our challenge unique:

  • Participants will use disposable cameras, leveling the playing field regardless of experience or economic background
  • This approach encourages critical thinking and immersion in the event, aligning with the raw, spontaneous aesthetic of street art
  • Selected photos will be showcased in a gallery exhibition in October

Program Details

  • Diverse group of 4-6 young people selected through an application process (number of youth participants relies on funds raised)
  • Informational session prior to the event
  • Photography at the Meeting of Styles event on Saturday, September 14, 2024
  • Two 27-exposure disposable cameras provided to each participant
  • Professional processing, scanning, printing and framing by VBLYPhoto
  • Curation by a panel of professional artists

Funding Needs

To bring this vision to life, we're seeking support for:

  • Disposable cameras
  • Film processing and scanning
  • Printing and Framing materials for the gallery exhibition

The estimated cost is $150-200 per young person, with a minimum of $900-1,200 needed for the program.

In-kind donations of materials are greatly appreciated!
